The Women of My Community

These are the women of my community.

Sitting in white plastic chairs at the community center.

Chatting about the latest neighborhood news.

Women in fashionable, yet modest, dress, and carefully done makeup.

Women in a casual pair of pants, their dyed hair uncovered, their
fingernails painted bright reds.

Women who came tonight for a break from all the stress. An evening of
culture, with the community choir and two professional actresses from Tel
Aviv. An evening rich with voices of song and creativity.

Women who watch nervously, as Smadar, the women who coordinates the
cultural activities, climbs on stage, interrupts the song, closes the
evening.

The whispered words fly quickly throughout the room.

A terrorist broke into a house in Itamar.

5 killed.

A women from the community lost her daughter and two grandchildren.

These are the women of my community.

They are scared.

They are angry.

They are tired. Emotionally drained.

They go home, tuck the blankets more tightly around they’re sleeping
children, and take some deep breaths.
