I will Take With Me
It is easy to feel the spirit of The TIYUL
when dancing in the dark,
arms waving, beating heart.
It’s easy to want to feed the world
with a hungry child in your lap.
It’s easy to love the earth
with arms around a tree trunk, fingers stuck in sap.
It’s easy to swear you’ll never forget
how lucky you are around
the homeless and the sick
and the children who are never told that they
are loved.
But I need to remember when it is no longer easy.
When “Od Yavo Shalom Aleinu” no longer
rings in my ears
and the stars which once twinkled
in the clear Vermont sky struggle to shine though
the New York smog.
I need to remember when I am discussing how I am going to dress tomorrow
instead of how I am going to heal the world.
So I will take with me an appreciation of silence
so I can hear myself think,
and the energy of singing at the top of my lungs
so that I can drown out all bad thoughts.
I will take with me the innocence of children
who so willingly took my hand
unaware of the evils of the world,
and the wisdom of the elderly
who have seen the evils of the world and
still found room in their hearts to love and share.
I will take with me the hope of the children
who have been told by doctors that there is nothing to hope for.
I will take with me the feeling of soil
between my fingers and how clean it felt
to kneel down in a garden and get dirty.
I will take with me the satisfaction of stepping back,
wiping the sweat off my forehead
and realizing that I made a difference..
There are differences to be made.
I will take with me the thirst to make a difference.
