The "N Word"

My dad grew up at a time
When civil rights were young
And so very unpopular.
Sometimes when he says the "n word"
I get mad at him.
It's not right, I say to him,
To use that word;
Please don't say it.
But he'll still use the "n word"
Around me anyway.
Maybe I can't conceive
A world without equality
Or why he'll use
Such an ugly word;
Maybe it's not my place
To say.
But what is the use of new ideals
If the old ones still exist?
