Dangerous Nonsense

By Yaffa Shira Fredrick

Everyone is his own carver, said Jonathan Swift.
Ideally, everyone should be his own carver.
Yet free societies are essentially formed as corrupt and decadent.
Full of misery and humiliation,
Where your fate is decided at birth.

Operation Lightning,
The President calls on his viewers to enlist in the army.
Informing them to partake in the great turning points in the story of freedom.
Neglecting to mention the four dead and eleven wounded.

How little he knows,
The United States stands as the last superpower.
The lone man who weeps over its dearth.
Outside of it, democracy is nowhere to be found.
Well except for possibly Israel.
But they gained their liberty through bombing, humiliating, and lying.

Edward Said would like to believe that Israel is the devil’s utopian idealism,
However he forgets no race possesses such power.
No monopoly of beauty, of intelligence, of force, of connection to G-d.

Who could blame him though for trying to protect minority rights;
The Palestinians’ rights which are not just a metaphor but a reality.
The ones that take innocent lives to create chaos for the cameras.
The ones that make girls disappear at twenty past two.
They will fail.
And we will prevail.

Toppling governments,
We will exit in victory and glory,
Not in crushing defeat.
Surely, the time is now.

There can be no question a stable and democratic Iraq is in the vested interest of us all.
And in terms of the power struggle they face,
A good part of the blame lies with us.
For the appalling caricatures of Arabs and Muslims we convey.
This is dangerous nonsense.

Then there is oil.
