I'm Elisheva, sixteen, Israeli, and achiever of an impressive 98 on my
English matriculation exam. I hope it's not cliche to say that A.H.A.V.A. should get all the credit. Since elementary school I've been using A.H.A.V.A.'s methods to learn English. I've learned to write boring compositions, analyze poetry and look up words in dictionaries with record breaking speed.
Besides throwing wide open the doors of my future with the key of the ever essential English, A.H.A.V.A.'s teachers have introduced me to one of the richest treasures, enjoyable reading and writing in English, without the bitter frustration which torments many of my high school friends.
Last year, I decided to volunteer with A.H.A.V.A. Once a week I tutor a group of tiny (literally) English speakers. I watch as these itsy-bitsy kindergartners slowly grasp the amazing reality of reading. I watch as they collect the precious stones of their future: essays, reporting skills and even basic spelling. I watch as these children build a bridge to the greater world and brighten their own horizons so that they may soar.
A.H.A.V.A. is an Israeli nonprofit organization dedicated to improving English literacy for all Israeli children. Please visit our website, http://ahava.n3.net/, or write to us at yoselis@netvision.net.il to find out how you can get involved.
