Harry looked out of his dormitory window. He thought he saw something move around on the grounds, reached for his invisibility cloak, and stopped, thinking hard. Now that Dumbledore was gone, McGonagall had proclaimed that each and every person who broke the rules would get detention for two hours with Filch, in the dungeons. McGonagall had explained that this was for the students own good, because she did not want them getting killed in the night by You-Know-Who. Then the shadow moved again, this time inching closer and closer to Hagrid’s cabin. Harry knew Hagrid wasn’t there, but then saw that the shadow was a big one, huge in fact. “Well, well, Hagrid’s come back, hasn’t he? We’d better go meet him.” Rolling to his left he remembered that Ron was gone, at home with Ginny… and Fred and George. Mrs. Weasley had offered to take Harry along with Ron and Ginny, but Harry had declined. He was worried that Voldemort would come looking for him, and he didn’t want to get the Weasley’s in trouble.
Hermione was…it was too painful to think about it. She had been killed a few weeks before by one of the Voldemort’s followers, and that was the last straw for the Harry. Harry had remembered his promise that if the time came, he would take as many Death-Eaters and possibly even Voldemort down to the grave with him. Harry Knew this was possible, for he had just gotten Nagini, the snake, and killed her. She had been the last Horcrux.
Hagrid’s door opened, and the shadow went in. Harry wasted no more time, and got the invisibility cloak on and left the room. He walked out of the portrait room, careful to make not a sound, and in a few minutes (and a few shortcuts) was walking in the warm night air to Hagrid’s cabin. The light was on, and suddenly Harry heard a soft moaning sound. Inching closer to the door, Harry knocked softly. There was no answer, and knowing that Hagrid would have opened for him anyway, tried the door. It opened, and instead of Hagrid sitting in his usual place at the table, the room was empty. The door closed suddenly. Then, too late Harry realized that he didn’t have his cloak on.
Wondering where it could have fallen, he stooped… and narrowly missed a beam of red light that shot out of nowhere. “So Potter, we meet again. The Dark Lord would like to have a….urgent meeting with you tonight.” Snape’s voice said, speaking out from thin air. “Yes Potter, I am wearing your cloak, unless you are so dense that you believe you are still wearing it, and in order to get this... family heirloom back, I suggest that you come along with me to the Dark Lord, need I also mention that a certain Ginny Weasly is also going to be there, unless of course, she has been hurt, because so far you have not shown up.”
Harry felt as if a cold knife had just cut him in half, all he could think about was Ginny, the time he had saved her from the Basilisk, their friendship last year, and his breaking up with her to protect her. His last coherent thought was how on earth had they found out about Ginny? Snape, he thought, before realizing that Snape had hold of his arm, and with a crack, they were gone from the cabin, gone from the Hogwarts grounds, and standing on the edge of a large, clear blue lake.
Looking around, he saw Snape throw his invisibility cloak in the lake. As the cloak touched the water, there was a sound of fabric ripping, and Harry saw his invisibility cloak, now ripped into shreds, sink to the bottom of the lake. “What’s in that lake, sir?” he asked with a touch of horror. “Potter, I will not answer you because I see you have not changed at all since the last time we met. You are still the most arrogant boy. However, the Dark Lord will soon sort you out. Follow me, Potter.” Snape said, and without further ado, walked right into the lake. He beckoned to Harry, and Harry edged closer to the edge, and slowly put his foot in. A strange sensation flooded his body, and looking down at his foot, Harry saw that it had turned blue. “What is this stuff, sir?” Harry asked. “The Dark Lord has prepared this special lake just for you.” said Snape. “What do you mean, just for me? Is it some kind of potion, or…poison?!” said Harry, gazing at his blue foot. “No Mr. Potter, it is merely a lake with an underwater cave, now come on” answered Snape with a touch of annoyance, “Now follow me, or I will stupefy you and drag you unconscious to the cave.”
Harry followed, pausing only to get used to the freezing water. In the middle of the lake, Snape stopped and reached down as if trying to find something. A moment later, he straightened up triumphantly. Harry was about to ask why but suddenly he felt himself being jerked downwards as if someone had hold of his ankles and was violently pulling him into the center of the lake and face-first into the strange, lifeless dark water. Harry and Snape went through the bottom of the pond, and emerged into an underwater cavern that was pitch-black.
Snape’s wand tip ignited, and Harry remembered the classes they had had to take with Snape about nonverbal spells. But of course, Harry remembered, Snape was an expert on those. “The Dark Lord wants to see you immediately, because it seems Ginny Weasley has….escaped”. Harry sighed with relief. Just then Snape began walking toward the small patch of light, and bowed. Harry followed, and there, sitting on a gilded, ornate throne, was Voldemort. “This Potter, is your end.” said Voldemort. “Avada Kedavra!” There was a flash of green light, and Harry and Voldemort…..died.
