Dear Shiri

My name is CD a.k.a Chaim David. I am 18 and made aliya in Feb of this year, I am currently studying in yeshiva and will be starting my army service next year in august. I am very willing to answer any questions you may have. The aliya depratment in my city(Cape Town, South Africa) had a special youth aliya shaliach who was very helpful, he practictly set me up entirely for my aliya. You should find out if there is one in LA, I'm sure there is. Please email me any questions you may have, and I'll try answer them or pass them on to someone who may know the answer.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello,
My main questions are very practical ones for a 19 year old making aliyah alone.
Well I have pretty general questions. I'm 19 so I don't have to go to the army. But my main concerns are my expenses when I get to Israel for an apartment. I really would like to find a furnished apartment in Tel Aviv with 2 bedrooms but I just want to know if anyone made aliyah alone and where they stayed when they got to Israel and just basic things. I know its not specific but I basically need to know everything!! SORRY! =) So, if anyone has answers for me about an apartment or how much money they went to Israel with or how much is suggested to start off decently for the first couple of months, it would be great!!
Thanks a lot...SHIRI

Dear Pini,
I saw your pictures and they are really really amazing. I'm very curious what you used to make them. I do art work myself.

I read the quiz that supposedly tells you whether you will ever be able to get on with Israelis or not. I think that the quiz has nothing to do with people's ability to get on with Israelis. Israelis are people, just like all of us. I think people need to see them as individuals instead of seeing them as a stereotype. The quiz talks about the clothes you wear, how you like to have your hair, whether you like talking to people that are of the opposite gender, etc. Since when does that define whether you can get along with other people?? And does the type of music or the sort of actors you like determine anything? The only thing that I think is slightly connected with the subject is the questions that ask how you are socially... and your attitude towards Israel. I'm not trying to be obnoxious but to me the rest of the quiz seems very materialistic and nothing to do with anything.

My goodness, thank you Ori. Hitler (I can't even say the name) should have NEVER even been thought of as man/woman of the century. Sure, Hitler (ugh) did shape the century, but again, neo-nazis WILL interpret this as an uprising. I went to the website and voted twice, once for Ghandi and once for Gorbachev. Yet Hitler is #2 on the list, right before Yitzak Rabin, a wonderful person. I urge you to vote aginst Hitler!
Thanx,

Hi,
I'm interested in a list of Jewish actors and actresses in showbiz that are Jewish. For example, I know Natalie Portman and Alicia Silverstone are Jewish and thought you might know of others that's all. Please email back if you can tell me of others that you know of for sure. Thanks

Dear RJ,
I'm sorry that these girls are tormenting you. Here's what I would do, being the carefree nerd I am: The next time one of these girls says this to you, just think nothing of it.

Now I know that this sounds like something your mom would say, but do it. Plus, don't go up to these girls without a friend. There is safety in numbers. If they keep on tormenting you, think: "When I grow up they'll be working for me for minimum wage in the bottom of a factory, while I'll be in my huge skiscraper in the most fashionable corner of Tel-Aviv having the greatest time." Hope it helps. Good Luck! :)

Dear Ori,
Ok, so we don't want Hitler to be "Person of the Century", right? Then who should it be?
And besides, I hate to say it, but Hitler most definitely fits the criteria. And, perhaps, he may be the best choice. Think about it, he has most definitely been the major worst influence this century. Probably more than anyone else.
-Bree

Dear Bree,
I definitely understand your point, and quite a few of my friends have already said the same. I would like to explain to you again what it would mean to have Hitler be the "MVP" of this century.
Well, he might have shaped history more than anyone else during the last 100 years and we know in which way, but the Neonazi groups will interpret his election in their favor! There is a big danger, and especially since I am from Germany I know that a lot of German Jews are very sensitive about this, just as I am.
People have already told me that what I do is to ignore the fact that a tyrant like Hitler has had the biggest influence on world history. Well, do you know why he was on position number one? The Nazis did exactly the same thing I did, they called on their people to vote for Hitler! Why? I just explained why, and we can not let their wish come true! We can not give them what they want. Just like in Israel we can not stop the peace process just because the Hamas wants it that way!!!
I was very delighted to see that people care about this topic, and I would like to receive a response from you to what I just wrote. Maybe you have changed your mind. Let me know!
Shalom

Seeking information about an Israel program, long-term or for the summer, for a seventeen-year-old girl from an Orthodox background who presently does not identify as such. She would do particularly well in a structure that stresses activity rather than classroom learning. (She likes children and animals--lehavdil.) In a classsroom setting, she would like an atmosphere of a free exchange of ideas where her own contributions and points of view are welcomed.

Summer camp or Israel programs can be found on Virtual Jerusalem. There are Israel study programs, short and long-term ulpans, and travel information for the family planning its own vacation. Jimmy,
Nice article. I think you are absolutely correct. The problem with modern society is that it feels that if it separates "chuch and state" then all their problems will be solved. This is the wrong attitude and the wrong upbrining to give to our children. When somebody is taught that there is a G-d above, watching us, seeing us, and nothing is hidden from Him, then they'll think twice. I don't think the media are publicizing the shooting too much. Actually, they are right and should continue to do it, but with one change. They should bring the message to the world that without our educating our children to know the difference between right and wrong--without our drilling into them that there is a G-d above, this can, G-d forbid, happen anywhere, anytime.

Check out Jewish Hotsites on Shavuot also don't miss what the wzo is saying about the holiday!
Batya,
About the army, I've heard both sides. Some people told me not to go because according to them, I'd be wasting years of my life and by the time I'd enter college, I'd be 21, graduating at 25. I brought up the arguement that if I'm going to be making aliya and reaping the benefits of that, I should give something back. To that I was told by several, some being Israeli themselves, that I can give back by bearing and raising Israeli children and just by being a productive member of society. On the other side, I've been told by a couple people that I should go. One of these people made a particular impression on me. She was an Israeli young woman, about 22 years old, who had just finished her service, where she was an officer on a naval ship. She told me that it was the most worthwhile experience of her life and that she was a more complete person because of it. She told me that a common term of endearment prescribed to the army service is "Universita Ha'lev" (University of the heart). I can't tell you what to decide. Besides the fact that this is a decision every person must make for him or herself, I myself haven't even decided. I hope I've been of some help.

Hi Aaron.
I'll be in the Old City from August 1999-June 2000. The program I'm going on is a post high-school religious Zionist yeshiva. I'm almost too excited to contain myself. I've also only been to Jerusalem once, but it deeply affected me. It wasn't anything specific that made me feel the way I do about Jerusalem and Israel. It just felt like home to me. Maybe it's foolish to feel that way after only 6 weeks, but a year will give me a chance to decide whether I really see Israel as my home.

Hi Batya,
I'm also an American observant girl. I'm finishing my senior year in high school right now. When I was in tenth grade, I made the decision to make Aliya. I also have the same issue with the IDF. Some people have told me not to go if I don't have to, and some people have told me that it's the most meaningful experience you can have. At this point, I think I've decided to go to college, but there's always room to change my mind. I'm studying in a Yeshiva next year and that's when I'll see if Aliya works out. What made you want to make Aliya?
Rifka

Hi Rifka,
I'm in 11th grade. I grew up in a family that has been major Zionists. We never did anything about it though (for many reasons) and the whole Israel thing started to fade from my head. I totally believe that actions speak sooo much louder than words and I felt that if a person really truly loves Medinat Yisrael soo much they should show it and move there. Then last year I went to Israel for two weeks and fell in love...with the land! I'd been in Israel when I was 9, but at that time, to me, it was just a little more than a really fun trip. But last year I was old enough to really see Israel.

I love how in Israel no one can tell you that you don't belong. Anywhere else you go, maybe you have the right to be there, but people can make you feel really unwelcome. In Israel, you have G-d's word on your side telling you that you belong there and that the land is yours!

Also, I love how in Israel it's Israel, the nation as opposed to in America (at least where I am) it's Judaism , the religion. Somehow Israel, the nation, gives identity. Hope this makes sense.
Batya
p.s. I'm not as fanatical as this thing sounds. I'm just extremely passionate. p.p.s. What did people tell you about army life?

Egged is running buses all day long from Binyanei HaUmah. Shimon Hatzadik is located just a few minutes away from the Old City in the direction of Ramat Eshkol.

If you're coming for MBD only, don't show up until at least 6:30-7:00

Dear Helaine,
A suggestion---I know of a girl that made aliya at 16 and although her Hebrew was not bad by the time she was finishing High School 2 years later, she still did not feel comfortable enough to take the Bagruyot. So what she did is to go back to the U.S. for the summer, take a prep course and then the SAT's -- and use the SAT's as a basis upon which to get into college here (when she finishes Sherut Leumi). Apparently, that will work -- the universities will accept the SAT scores instead. You may want to check this option.

Just wanted to let you know that I'm an American high schooler as well. I will be studying at Hebrew University and The Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem from January 2000 untill June of 2000. Where are you studying at? I've only been to Jerusalem once with my family. It was a very moving experience and I hope to gain a better understanding of the country. The program I will be in has special volunteer opportunities. Do you know of any organizations or institutions in Jerusalem that need help from a young student?
