Book review

THEN AND NOW
            By Leah Ain Globe

"Then and Now" is a collection of entertaining stories, colorful characters and meaningful messages. Leah Ain Globe brings to life wonderful experiences from a lifetime of joy. The stories have a variety of subjects such as love, hate, life, death, children, adults, marriage, divorce and a taste of Jewish customs.

The book consists of three sections: Then--stories about life in American; Now--stories about aliyah and living in Israel; and Art--stories about the author's art, which you can see a sample of on the cover.

All of these stories end with a punch line, which makes you laugh, or think of the irony, or in some stories, understand something that was unclear throughout the story. The author uses rich language, and when needed, tosses in a word in Hebrew or Yiddish. The third part, Art, contains stories about how the author learned to see and learned what art is and how to paint. This was my personal, favorite part.
Throughout the book you can sense the spirit of an artist.

As a 9th grader, I enjoyed reading the book and I hope many other people will enjoy it after me. I wish Mrs. Globe a Happy 99th birthday and I hope she will have many more years of art and success with her family. I admire the fact that she keeps a young spirt and with that the wisdom which you can only acquire with experience,

Note: Mrs. Globe, a resident of Jerusalem, spoke to Keron's English class about her most recent book, "Then and Now." Keron wrote the following book report for the website after Mrs. Globe's talk. The students wrote thank you notes to Mrs. Globe and two of the thank you notes are published below.

I just wanted to tell you that I enjoyed your lovely story Imagination.
It puts me back to the place of a scared little 10 year-old-girl who came to Israel from Russia in 1990. It might sound funny (the story) to someone who hadnt been there, but I still rememer never answering questions in class because I always had the fear of ansering wrong, mixing up words....

After 7 years in Israel Ive changed, and also my language. But I still feel as though Ive been there, in that class.

Thank you for the wonderful feeling I got from your story.
Yours truly,

I read your story Imagination, and I thought about all the people that I know who are immigrants and I understand their sorrow and difficulties.
I didnt understand it in this way before I read your story. Thank you. It was important for me.
Yours truly,
