A Trip to Amsterdam
I recently traveled to Amsterdam. It was a chedah trip - we stayed in a Jewish guest house, ate at all the kosher restaurants, went to the Anne Frank house (it's tiny - really tiny) and the Jewish Museum and an enourmous Sephardi Shul. We had the most amazing time. I led the benching every big meal, and I was on madrich duty all the time. One boy brought an American WWII helmet and I marched the kids up the canals of Amsterdam in Hebrew (smal, smal, smal-yemiyneh-smal!) and we danced the hora and sang Hebrew songs as we walked through the old ghetto. I can't explain it - it was something very special. I was the only madrich there, although there were 3 mums and a 21 year old guy who had lived there.
They killed 103,000 Jews from Holland, 70,000 from Amsterdam (out of 140,000) in the camps. And I came back and sang "Am Yisrael CHAI!" in the streets, where they cowered before deportation.
I got a great klezmer CD (the klezmatics etc.),
and met a jew from the Bronx. We ate so many falafels...
I am still recovering in the inevitable way!
It is only a 40 minute flight to Amsterdam from London, so altogether
a fantastic Jewish trip!!!
