Goals

by Tamar Milgram

If you look in the dictionary under the word "goal" you will get something to this effect--- 1. something toward which effort or movement is directed: an end or object. 2. the terminal part of a journey or race. ( Funk & Wagnalls Standard Desk Dictionary)

If you as a person have nothing to look forward to, or nothing greater in mind, how can you expect to live your life? Where you are today might satisfy you, but there is always more to accomplish and more to see. Everybody's goals are different, but all are worthy. Some are tangible; some are intangible.

For me, making Aliyah is a primary goal. There are some things I would like to achieve on the way (like a college education) but I want to end up in Israel. With that thought in my head at all times, I am going to do everything in my ability to fulfill this dream of mine. Just knowing that there is something better waiting for me, makes life livable. We often make the statement "I wish" or "I want". Well instead of wishing and wanting, act towards fulfilling. Even if it is as little as getting a new shirt, get the job and get it.

If it is something bigger like better grades, or personal contentment, act towards them. I am not saying that everything you want, you will get). We do not live in a perfect world, but by having and fulfilling dreams, helps to clear up a cloudy day or give you the last ounce of energy you need. I really think living through your dreams is the best way to live. I WILL BE IN ISRAEL!

While I was at camp this summer, I was able to learn how to focus on my goals. Here are a few hints that I learned that I can share that may help some of you. First write a paragraph of what you want for your life (e.g. married, 2 kids etc.) then make a list of ways to achieve them (e.g. go to college, etc.). Keep the list some place you will see often. If you achieve even the smallest thing, write it down! Give yourself the credit you deserve. Speak to your parents about your goals (easier said then done, I know), They seem more in reach if you are not alone!

Although it is good to focus on your goals, you should not forget what you have on your plate, now, You have to put the same amount of effort into today as you do to tomorrow! I wish you all much Hatzlacha (success) with getting what you dream for.
