A Review of Anne of Avlonea
by L.M. Montgomery

Anne Shirley lives on Green Gables farm, Avlonea. Anne is sixteen years old. She has gray eyes that shine and has red hair. Anne cannot control her temper and that sometimes could get her into trouble. She has a reputation for getting into trouble. Anne started to be the school teacher in Avlonea. On the first day all the kids in the school were good except one boy who was a trouble maker. Anne did not have the heart to whip him. The only punishment she gave him was to write a hundred times "I will not act bad in class" or other quotations. Anne wanted all the children in her class to love her so she did not whip him because she thought if she whipped him he would never like her. Until one day she got so mad that she lost her temper and whipped him. From that day on he acted good. Marilla, Anne's mother, got a letter from her friend that she is very sick and if she could come for a few days and help watch the twins Dora and Davy. Marilla went to help her.

When she got home she told Anne that the twins have an uncle in England who will take them when she dies. A few days later the twins received a letter that Marillas friend died and the uncle cannot take them. They asked Marilla if she could take them. Marilla wrote back that she could. After Marilla went to the funereal she brought home the twins Dora and Davy. Dora was very well behaved, while Davy was a very big troublemaker. As the days passed Davy's behavior improved. Then they received a letter from England that the uncle had died and sent $2000 to help take care of Dora and Davy that allowed them to stay. Anne joined a club called A.V.I.S. Avlonea Village Improvement Society. They asked people who had houses that did not look nice to take them down to improve Avlonea. They collected money for a new paint job in the Town Hall Avlonea. The paint job came out ugly. In the club there was a boy named Gylberth with who Anne was in love. Gylberth was going to college next year. Anne wanted to go to but she did not want to leave Marilla alone with the twins. However, Marilla's friend Mrs. Lynde's husband died and they decided that if she would move in to Green Gables farm Anne would be able to go to college and that is what she did.
