Lucy Maud Montgomery was born on November 30, 1874, in Clifton, Prince Edward Island Canada. Although few women of that time received a higher education, Lucy attended Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown, P.E.I., and then Dalhousie University in Halifax. At seventeen Lucy worked for the newspaper, Halifax Chornicle. Then Lucy went back to Prince Edward Island to teach. It is the experience, along with the lives of her surroundings that came alive when she wrote her "Anne" books, beginnings with "Anne of Green Gables" in 1908. First for a Sunday school paper, Anne of Green Gables quickly became a favorite of readers throughout the world so much so that L.M. Montgomery published eight novels all featuring Anne Shirly and her family. L.M. also written "Emily New Moon" in 1923 followed by its two sequels and "Pat of Silver Bush" in 1933 with its sequel. She and her husband, Rev. Ewen MacDonald, eventually moved to Ontario. L.M. Montgomery died in Toronto in 1942. Anne of Green Gables has been translated into 17 different languages, made into number of movies and has had continuing success as a stage play. The success of these productions inspired "The Road to Avelonea enchanting new tales based on characters created by L.M. Montgomery for a television series as well as the new paperback editions.
