My AliyaWhen I think of the time leading up to my Aliyah two years ago, I remember a lot of fights, tears, door slamming, and threats. The thought of leaving everything I ever knew behind, saying goodbye to my friends, school, and my first boyfriend made me sad. Moving half way across the world to a place that at the time I thought was desert and Kibbutzim scared me. And on top of that I knew no Hebrew; my Hebrew consisted of-Shalom and Todah.I guess all those years of afternoon Hebrew school were a waste of time after all! I thought that when we arrived I was just going to be thrown into regular school and have to learn the language all by myself. But as the plane began to land outside of Tel Aviv, as we were over the deep blue Mediteranian Sea, the deep blue sea and the sand beach looked up as my first view of Israel, I felt a twinge of excitement in my belly. I was about to have the time of my life!
Reality And sure, there are some bad memories, Rabin's assasanation, tragic terrorist violence, and of course the bombs. I wouldn't trade this country for anything else. This is my country. ~Rachel Rothstein |
